Sikh Women to Discuss Guru Nanak

On Feb 20, 2016, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California and the Sikh Foundation are hosting, “The Language of Colors: A discussion of Guru Nanak’s Janamsakhi Life Stories.” It will be an exploration of Guru Nanak Sahib’s legacy though the museum’s collection of janamsaki pantings. The program begins with artist Rupy Kaur C. Tut demonstrating traditional miniature painting in the North Court at 1:00 pm. At 2:00pm, the program continues in Samsung Hall. Guest speakers include Dr. Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh, professor at Colby College and Kamla Kaur Kapur, author of "The Singing Guru: Legends and Adventures of Guru Nanak, the First Sikh." Kapur will sing a shabad and Qamar Adamjee, associated curator of South Asian and Islamic art, will introduce paintings on display in the gallery.

Dr. Nikky-Guninder Kaur (Professor): She will talk about how the paintings from the Kapany Unbound Collection use the language of colors to 1) highlight the Guru Granth Sahib 2) amplify Sikh theological precepts, and 3) express an existential mode of being in the world.

Kamal Kaur Kapur (Poet and playwright): She will discuss her book "The Singing Guru," which has been called "...a Sikh parallel of Homer’s Odyssey in the re-imagining of [Guru Nanak’s] spiritual journey, cleverly recounted in the voice of a mercurial acolyte."

Rupy Kaur C. Tut (Artist): Rupy has been interviewed by Kaur Life in the past and we are excited for her involvement in this event. Her art (painting and calligraphy) is inspired by her Sikh-American background, and explores themes of identity and multiculturalism.
