You Are a Burden
To My Future Daughter
By Khushmit Kaur
In this poem a mother speaks to her daughter about an incident where she is called a burden. The mother gives advice while recognizing the South Asian culture many Sikhs are embedded in.
Dheeay, apniyan akkhan de hanju poonj leh.
Oh daughter, wipe the tears from your eyes.
Na sun eh duniya de taahne.
Do not pay heed to this world’s taunts.
Tu mera bohj nahi, tu hi meri zindagi hai.
You are not my burden, you are my life.
Tu ik jimevaari nahi, tu hi meri bakhsh hai.
You are not a responsibility, you are a blessing.
Tu kissay di nahi, eh duniya teri hai.
You are not someone’s, this world is yours.
Ajj da din baar baar aavega.
Today will repeat itself.
Tenu bohj keh ke eh duniya majboor karegi.
This world will try to render you helpless.
You may even believe its taunts to be true.
At those moments, remember your mother’s words.
Yaad rakhna ke eh duniya teri hai.
Remember that this world is yours.
Tu apne rangan naal ais duniya nu hor rangeen kari.
Adorn the world with your colors.
Tu apne shabdan naal apni kahaani aap likhi.
Write your own story.
Jadh Jadh rukavatan saamna karn,
As you face obstacles,
Remember that the responsibility to reform is in your hands.
Himmat te sabar tere hathiyar.
Courage and patience are your weapons.
Ajj takk dhiyan ne benathiyan keetiyan,
Until today, daughters have continued making pleas,
Par vakt aagiya ke apne hakkan leiye lardan.
But it is time that they fight for their rights.
Benathiyan ta koi koi sunda hai,
Only few hear the sounds of pleas,
Par farmaan har ikk takk pahunchde hun.
But demands reach all,
Ehna farmaana di avaaz jald mehsoos hovegi.
And soon we will feel the sounds of these demands.
Dheeay, apnian akkhan de hanju poonj leh.
Tu kise di nahi, eh duniya teri hai.
You are not someone’s, this world is yours.
